We are writing to wholeheartedly nominate Flor Giusti for the Inspired to Inspire Award. Flor exemplifies a woman who inspires others. Her degree is Masters of Social Work, but she goes beyond her degree. Flor’s true passion is the empowerment of others. Her deep commitment to raising others up has been demonstrated in her over 20 years of work with Baltimore women and families including 16 years working with victims of domestic violence. Flor has worked to break the cycle of violence not only working one on one with the victims, but also with abusers. In addition, she has provided instruction and expertise to courts, police, and many service providers to bring light and understanding to the many facets and sequelae of domestic violence.

For the past five years Flor has been working with families, especially the parents of the Children’s Medical Practice at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Most of Flor’s clients are low-income and have significant needs for which there are few resources. Rather than be discouraged or discouraging, Flor works with clients to identify possible solutions, both material and mental. She has a keen knack for being able to meet people where they are, and to show them an internal strength that they didn’t know they had. She sees the power and strength in others when they often can’t see it themselves. She believes in them until they are able to believe in themselves. She is greatly respected and treasured by those with whom she works and those whom she serves.

One example of her dedication and determination to make the most of limited resources is her volunteer work with Testimonios. Testimonios is a weekly stress-reduction support group for Latino immigrants in Baltimore, led by volunteer therapists, most weeks by Flor. Testimonios group participants share stories about their experiences, and put a voice to their strengths and stressors, in a safe and supportive environment. Flor cultivates a safe environment for all participants but women, in particular, relate incredibly well to her gentle but empowering approach.

Flor has also mentored many others to follow in her footsteps in becoming social workers (no easy task!). She has served as supervisor for many others acquiring needed hands-on experience in social work. She leads by example – encouraging, guiding and challenging her mentees – and many now serve at her side, in similar roles, offering similar services to needy and grateful clients. My own son credits Flor with inspiring his decision to pursue a degree in Social Work.

Flor Giusti’s approach and work can be summarized with the term “Gentle Giant.” She is determined to help others help themselves. She practices the theory, “If you give someone a fish, they are fed for a day. If one is taught to fish, they are fed for a lifetime.” Flor has helped many people recognize within themselves their own ‘ability to fish’ and surely changed countless lives! We can think of no one more deserving of the “Inspired to Inspire Champions and Visionaries Award” than Flor Giusti!
