Education Programs

Hispanic Heritage Month has been taking place in the US since 1968 to celebrate culture, contributions and histories of Hispanics in the country. Read more information in the first post about this celebration at Johns Hopkins.

The celebration is not over, Centro SOL ever since its foundation and earlier has been committed to highlight the contributions made by our new neighbors and to promote equity in health. By collaborating and partnering with groups within Hopkins, we are creating awareness of the growing Latino population, their assets and contributions and needs. The Hispanic Heritage month was a great opportunity to provide information to students from the School of Nursing, faculty and staff at Johns Hopkins Bayview, the Avance Conference in Washington DC and other venues.

Partnering with community-based organizations has helped to create awareness about health and access to health within the Latino population we serve. The Hispanic Heritage month was also a great opportunity to bring the community to the Hopkins community with the participation in the 5K race, Mueveton at Patterson and the culture and arts day with dance performances of local groups and the first ever TEDxHighlandtownLive with youth.

Today we want to highlight successful projects like the Youth Summer Program with 6 outstanding students from Baltimore City and Baltimore County high schools, Testimonios to support immigrants and prevent major mental health issues, the Latino Family Advisory Board to improve the quality of health services provided to Latino families, the Research portfolio and services to achieve, understand and improve the health of Latinos and the proficiency of the Hopkins professionals, the health columns, radio show and Embajadores de Salud as three educational endeavors to benefit our Latino community’s health. Today we want to congratulate our team for the tremendous efforts to achieve Centro SOL’s mission and the excellence goal of Hopkins recognized by awards like the Baltimore City Mayor’s Hispanic Heritage Award and finalist of the Hospital Charitable Services Award, among others.

And we would like to keep the celebration every and each day, by keep working with and for our Latino community, increasing our networks, creating awareness in and outside Hopkins and promoting health education and culture and healthy habits.

Finally, today we want to thank our partners, volunteers, providers, advisers and community for the continuous support.
