We are grateful for the trailblazers who paved the way for all of us in our history and those who make our lives better day by day. We celebrate the life and contributions of our team members, colleagues, and allies this International Women’s History Month.

¿De dónde eres? comparte algo característico de tu lugar de origen. Where are you from? share something typical from where you are from.

I was born in the Hudson River Valley of New York State. It is a land where the ancient glaciers carved a deep river which flows into the Atlantic Ocean. I was raised in an area known for Apple Orchards and Dairy Farms. I always feel most at home when I am in nature. I worked on one of the dairy farms after school when in high school. They did not pay me in cash. I was paid a gallon of milk and time to ride the horses. I felt that was a fair deal. I come from a large, loving and very close family. We are Irish and German in origin and I love our traditions: Family, Faith and Fun!

¿A qué te dedicas? What do you do?

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (an LCSW-C) and I have dedicated my life to helping people discover peace, safety, and wellness in whatever stage they find themselves in this journey of life. In my role as a bilingual mental health provider, I build therapeutic experiences that honor the entire person in a culturally and linguistically integrated, respectful relationship. I am especially dedicated to inviting all people, no matter where they are from or what languages they speak to become fully welcomed members of our society. I am a true believer in the power of healing, and I have a passion for ensuring that everyone I meet knows that they are so very important and so very respected.

What inspires you?

I have always been very motivated by the importance of inclusion. As a young person, I was terribly bullied for my learning differences. I found that the more people felt included, the more creative and kinder the world is. I seek to build a world in which inclusion and kindness help drive creativity and community.

What would you tell your younger self about where you are in life?

I wish that I left to live in Mexico earlier. I was fortunate to have made the decision to go to Mexico to help at an orphanage after the 1985 earthquake. It was transformative. It is critical to experience other cultures and learn other languages. Due to my heritage, I took German for 8 years, but if I could have done it all over, I would have sought to understand Latin American Cultures earlier. There is so much richness and so much to learn from the beautiful peoples of the Americas.
Me hubiera ido a vivir a México antes.

Although everything you’ve accomplished in your life is the product of your efforts, there are always people to thank or think about who supported you. Who are those people for you and why?

My parents always encouraged and guided me. I am very family oriented and when I got married, I widened my family to include Argentine relatives! I thank them for allowing me to understand the pain of civil war and how it can linger in generations. I am especially thankful to my first Social Work Supervisor, Pat Walter, who taught me to ” always wonder about what the other person does not feel you can understand of their experience.” My husband, Marcelo, taught me to be brave, no matter how impossible something seemed, and my mentor Tom Koenig, taught me to be a fierce and implacable advocate for the needs of our Spanish Speaking, Latino patients struggling with mental wellness.

Mis padres siempre me motivaron y guiaron.

What does it mean for you equity in opportunity for Latinos?

Equity means bringing the full force of what you know to the table and having that knowledge be honored and implemented. There is depth and richness in the perspectives of Latino cultures. Equity goes beyond access. Equity demands inclusion as decision and policy makers at all levels. Equity is not accomplished via surveys. Equity requires a widening of perspectives so that we can all walk forward together.
