Project Title

Salud al Día: Engaging Latino Parents in Pediatric Primary Care

Project Summary

This randomized controlled trial evaluated the impact of a Spanish-language mHealth intervention, consisting of an educational video and interactive text messages throughout the child’s first year, on infant healthcare quality and utilization among low-income Latino infants in immigrant families. This population was targeted due to their high risk for experiencing health disparities. The intervention was developed in conjunction with the Latino Family Advisory Board who provided feedback on video and text message content and design. A Center for Social Design fellow from the Maryland Institute College of Art provided graphic design for the video. Text messages were programmed and sent by emocha Mobile Health.

157 parent participants (Intervention n=79, Control n=78) were recruited to the study. Primary outcomes included up-to-date well care, immunizations, and emergency department use and were abstracted from the electronic medical record at age 15 months. Secondary outcomes were: parent activation (measured with the Parent Patient Activation Measure), parent experience of care (using selected CG-CAHPS questions), and infant health knowledge (5 question survey). These outcomes were assessed amongst parent participants completing a follow-up survey at age 12-15 months.

The results of this study are expected to be disseminated at the Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting in May of 2019.
