Project Title

Piloting Group Well-Child Visits for Limited English Proficiency (LEP) Latino Families at Children’s Medical Practice

Project Summary

Described as a ‘biopsychosocial approach to care,’ group well-child care (group pediatric well-child visits) are being suggested as a form of pediatric primary care redesign that may better meet the needs of families, and over 50 sites across the country are delivering well-child care in this fashion. By combining individual assessment with facilitated group discussion, group visits represent a fundamental shift in well-child care delivery. Such models replace typical 15 minute individual preventive health visits with a 90 to 120 minute group visit for 6 to 8 parent/infant dyads. In these visits, each parent/infant dyad completes a shorter 1:1 evaluation with the provider, followed by a 45 to 60 minute group discussion moderated by the provider and another staff member. In this study we plan to use a social worker. Group prenatal visits are already being delivered at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

This study seeks to evaluate whether group pediatric well-child visits are feasible and acceptable, and to gather preliminary data on maternal, child, and health care quality outcomes (including social support, parenting self-efficacy, feeding knowledge, proportion of visits attended, child development, and patient satisfaction). We hypothesize that providers and LEP Latino parents will report that the group visit format is acceptable and feasible.
