Mental Health Programs

The Centro SOL Summer Scholars Program is a five-week long internship for high achieving bilingual high school students, regardless of their immigration status .

The goal of the program is to expose the students to careers in healthcare by providing meaningful shadowing rotations, department tours, and underlying research experience while also demonstrating the importance of their bilingualism in a healthcare setting. The program has been running since 2014, and five years later, Centro SOL is proud to celebrate the program and they youth growth. Read more about the program.

Success Stories

Scholars from the first cohort have all graduated high school

Most have or are completing an undergraduate degree

One is in a graduate program

Who are the scholars?

The Scholars from more recent years are also completing their high school education or currently in their undergraduate career.

The students of the Summer Scholars Program are all first generation college students who are breaking barriers and completing milestones for themselves and their families.

Join the Celebration!

In 2019, before the sixth year starts, we would love to celebrate the success of the Summer Scholars Program by hosting a Summer Scholars Reunion. The reunion will feature our wonderful partners, staff, community leaders, and most importantly the scholars and their families. Without the phenomenal students who strive to pursue high education and gain medical exposure, we would not understand how to best provide Latinx youth with both educational and professional support. Without the continued support of our partners at Johns Hopkins, we would not have the ability to provide the scholars with meaningful opportunities.

June 5th, 2019 at the Johns Hopkins Welch Library featuring Maria Koszalka, VP of Patient Care Services, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center

We hope that all participating scholars may attend with their families and we invite the new cohort of scholars to join us in the celebration as well. Prominent community members who have provided support along with Johns Hopkins employees and faculty will also be among the guests as well.

During the first reunion, we will introduce the Flor Giusti Award to recognize youth committment to academic achievement. The award is introduced in appreciation for Mrs. Giusti support to start the mentoring program in 2018/2019.

The Summer Scholars Reunion is sponsored by Centro SOL and the Johns Hopkins Government and Community Affairs.
