Community is our way to celebrate, and that’s how we finished 2017, a challenging year for our community members. Last December 16, 2017, 50 families received presents as part of our Annual Holiday Drive, gifts included toys, winter clothes, and other items requested and very needed by the families we serve. June 8.- The Latino Family Advisory Board had their last meeting of the school year. They discussed about the new Care-A-Van design, a very dynamic conversation around what and how the new mobile unit should have to welcome community. The celebration was also a farewell for the Centro SOL Research Scholar, Doris Valenzuela, who heads to her hometown Portland, OR to pursue her career in medicine. The Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) at Johns Hopkins University, among all their activities make some time for celebrations. In partnership with Centro SOL and the Latino Alliance, a celebration for the Hispanic Heritage Month will be hosted at Johns Hopkins Armstrong Medical Education building. This event is almost a-must this time of the year when faculty, students and staff latinos and/or working with Latinos in Baltimore get together to share experiences and a good time.
Meet Drew White (a.k.a. Andrés Blanco) Drew White is a medical student at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, currently taking a year off to pursue a Master in Public Health. He has been a great resource for the community. He leads the Hopkins students association called Bienestar which has provided TB information and vaccines in collaboration with the BCHD. He also supports the Embajadores de Salud wellness group with Centro SOL. Ready, set, go!! We are ready to celebrate the Hispanic Heritage Month 2015 “Honoring our heritage. Building our future.”. Kick off took place on September 9 at Johns Hopkins Bayview with a Culture and Arts Day, highlighting local artists. See the full list of festivities in the flyer below. The Embajadores de Salud (Health Ambassadors) program is focused on improving the community well-being by promoting healthy habits. Participants learn about health including nutrition. Currently, participants include entire families who want to learn more about their own health. Last month, the team had their first Healthy Recipes/Recetas Saludables Contest. 6 great plates made with ingredients from daily kitchen, brought the team together to eat, have fun and promote healthy eating. The recipes are in English and Spanish. They were reviewed by a nursing student, and a judging panel of Hopkins members along with community participants, choose their favorite and healthy plate. … Continue reading
